To let go, to turn a page, to release negativity

For our ancestors, ceremony and ritual was just part of life. Within the community there were those who knew how to perform ceremony to cleanse spaces, help people let go of negative feelings and to heal the hurt left by separation. By drawing on the ancient wisdom of the past we may be able to find helpful answers for modern life.

Smudging

In many indigenous communities such as the Native American people, the burning of herbs is used for such purposes and this is called 'smudging'. Both people and places can be smudged.

Those who are inspired by nature and the old ways today, such as Pagans, also use such practices.

Release

Sometimes when we've been hurt it can be hard to let go. We may feel let down, angry, bitter or sad. It can be hard to let go of those feelings, we feel we have a right to have them and we may be right. But holding on to things that no longer serve us well can be destructive to our happiness and to our relationships.

Separation

Separation can come in many forms and although it may be painful it can also be viewed as the opportunity to turn the page and begin a new chapter in a similar way to the process of grief.

Divorce

A marriage is a ceremony to mark the union of two people. If life has not worked out as planned it can be painful. A ceremony for the gentle reversing of that union can be potentially transformative and healing.
